Responsibility for physical, mental health of ex-president Saakashvili rests with state, EU Ambassador says
The Georgian government is responsible for the physical and mental health of ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili, said EU Ambassador to Georgia Carl Hartzell.
“I’m not privy to firsthand information about the health situation of Mr. Saakashvili, nor am I a doctor to make the correct judgment. But I have been becoming increasingly concerned over recent reports coming, including from medical expertise regarding his condition. For me and for the European Union the crucial point is that the responsibility for the physical and mental health of Mr. Saakashvili rests with the state not as a matter of a political choice but as a matter of fundamental human rights,” Carl Hartzell said.
Public Defender-assigned group of doctors on April 27 published a new evaluation, saying that Mikheil Saakashvili’s health has “further deteriorated” since their previous visit to the Rustavi Prison in January.
