Referendum held on March 31 gave a solid foundation to the building of modern Georgian state, Georgian PM declares

“Referendum held on March 31 gave a solid foundation to the building of modern Georgian state and turned the journey to the ultimate goal into an irreversible path, as various generations of Georgians kept fighting and working hard for it”, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said in his statement.

Head of Government congratulates the Georgian citizens on the 31st anniversary of the historic referendum of March 31, 1991.

“Entire Georgia, including the local residents of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions, declared out loud and clear about its decision to regain statehood on this very day. The unanimous wish of people was guiding the Supreme Council of Georgia when passing the Act on Regained Sovereign Independence on April 9 of the same year.

A lot of people fought for this victory, though it is unarguable that it was great merits to late Zviad Gamsakhurdia – first President of Georgia and genuine public leader – in the first instance and he would have turned 83 today.

Referendum held on March 31 gave a solid foundation to the building of modern Georgian state and turned the journey to the ultimate goal into an irreversible path, as various generations of Georgians kept fighting and working hard for it. This overarching goal is a free, united and strong Georgia with its unique history and culture, positioned with dignity among the nations of the world.

I believe that loyalty towards the ideals of independence and freedom, as well as synergy of authorities and people is in essence the road leading to this overarching goal in the foreseeable future,” reads the statement by Georgian Prime Minister.
