Rally at President’s Administration in demand of Nika Gvaramia’s release

A rally is going on at the Orbeliani Presidential Residence with the demand to release jailed Nika Gvaramia, Director of the Mtavari Arkhi (Main Channel) TV.

Organizers of the protest urge President Salome Zourabichvili to use her constitutionally granted right and issue Nika Gvaramia’s pardoning act.

They believe that the imprisonment of Nika Gvaramia puts at risk the Georgian people’s clear choice and stated goal of Georgia’s European future.

Journalists and civic society representatives are addressing the rally participants.

On April 20, the International Press Institute (IPI) joined media freedom partners in writing to the President of Georgia, Salomé Zourabichvili, urging her to officially pardon leading TV station owner and publisher Nika Gvaramia, who has been in jail since May 2022.

The report of the US State Department, various non-governmental organizations, opposition parties, and international organizations, including Amnesty International, consider Nika Gvaramia’s case as politically motivated.
