Public Defender: Investigations ongoing on 4 criminal cases in Ninotsminda Boarding School

Public Defender’s Office requested information from the General Prosecutor’s Office and Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia about alleged offences that took place in the Ninotsminda Boarding School.

According to the information, investigations were launched into 4 criminal cases of alleged abuse of minors in 2016-2021. Three cases concern alleged violence, and one case – alleged rape.

According to Public Defender Nino Lomjaria, at this stage, the Public Defender’s Office lacks the detailed information about the alleged offences, circumstances or persons involved, or the measures taken in response.

The Public Defender’s Office has already applied to the responsible agencies with purpose to obtain additional information.

“The Public Defender’s Office continues to study the rights situation of children in the Ninotsminda boarding school,” reads the Ombudsman’s statement.
