General Prosecutor’s Office demands the arrest and imprisonment of Nika Melia, Chairman of the opposition United National Movement (UNM) party.
Prosecutor Amiran Guluashvili filed the prosecution’s appeal to the lawmakers to discuss authority termination for the MP at a joint sitting of the parliamentary Procedural and Legal Issues committees.
According to Amiran Guluashvili, imprisonment is the only juridical alternative to a stricter punitive measure in Nika Melia’s case since UNM Chair refused to respect the law and pay the bail.
While the opposition MPs would not support the authority termination to Nika Melia, the parliamentary majority is unanimous about all persons are equal before the law.
“The majority debated and came up with a common position that Nika Melia’s MP authority should be terminated. The law must be protected even if a person believes in the unfairness of the decision made. The law is supreme, and we must uphold the law,” said Davit Sergeenko, a majority MP.
Georgian Parliament will vote for MP Nika Melia’s mandate termination during Tuesday’s plenary session.
