Proposed structural changes in government remain disputable

Discussions about proposed structural changes, announced by the government to be feasible 2 weeks ago, are much debated in the parliament. Even one part of the parliamentary majority is against reduction in number of the ministries.

Lawmakers during the sitting of Parliamentary Environment Protection Committee today did not support the legislative package which envisages merging of Ministry of Environment Protection and Natural Resources and Ministry of Agriculture.

Giorgi Gachechiladze, Chairman of Parliamentary Faction “Greens” told journalists before the sitting that he would not back the legislative package about reorganization in the government. Gachechiladze said he was against unification of Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Environment Protection since it would raise conflict of interests.

The MPs also oppose to the idea that the direction of natural resources is handed over to Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development. Lawmakers also have questions about some other changes.
