Proposed legislation allows FM to hold Ambassador Extraordinary rank

The role of Georgia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs will be defined as the highest diplomatic position, according to legislative amendments submitted to the Parliament of Georgia.

Under current legislation, the First Deputy Minister and deputy ministers are classified as holding the highest diplomatic rank, despite their political status.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia argues that it is appropriate for the Foreign Minister, as the head of the diplomatic institution, to also hold the status of the highest-ranking diplomatic official.

According to the draft law, the amendment addresses this gap and would make it possible to grant the Foreign Minister the diplomatic rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.
