Prison service reports death of inmate at No. 17 penitentiary facility

Georgia’s Special Penitentiary Service has expressed condolences over the death of an inmate at Penitentiary Facility No. 17 and extended its sympathies to the deceased’s family and relatives.
According to a statement released by the service, it is actively cooperating with the investigative authorities and has already provided investigators with all relevant materials concerning the case.
“The Special Penitentiary Service would like to clarify that on October 2, 2026, an inmate identified as I.G. was found hanging in the restroom of Penitentiary Facility No. 17 by his cellmate in the morning.
“The Special Penitentiary Service immediately notified the Kvemo Kartli Prosecutor’s Office, and an investigation was launched into the incident.
“The inmate had been held at Penitentiary Facility No. 17 since 2023, with his sentence due to end in 2028. He was serving his sentence in a 20-person cell. On the day of his death, as the incident occurred in the morning, his cellmates were also in the cell.
“The Special Penitentiary Service is actively cooperating with the investigative authorities and has already provided the investigation with all relevant materials related to the case,” the statement said.
