“We have taken a very big, serious step towards the future,” said the President of Georgia, Salome Zourabichvili after the European Council (EC) granted the nation the EU candidate country status.
The President stressed that “Georgian people’s determination made the achievement of candidate status possible.”
Zourabichvili thanked EC President Charles Michel for his “great contribution and intense diplomatic efforts.”
“I would like to thank the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy as this [decision] is a great merit of his people.
I would also like to congratulate Maia Sandu [President of Moldova], the strongest woman today, who has withstood the greatest attacks and difficulties during this period.
Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia are examples of what it means to fight for freedom and Europe,” she stated.
