President Michel dubs today's European Council meeting as 'decisive moment for EU'
“I am confident that today we will grant the candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova and express a clear, strong European perspective for Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova”, European Council President Charles Michel told reporters in Brussels on Thursday.
“This is a decisive moment for the EU, the geopolitical choice that we will make today. I am confident that today we will grant the candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova and express a clear, strong European perspective for Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova. We have also an important meeting with the leaders of the Western Balkans. Important moment because there is a very strong political will to re-energise the process with the Western Balkans, to send a very strong and clear message,” President Michel stated.
European Council meeting today will have to decide on Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova EU membership bids.
On June 17, European Commission published a recommendation to greenlight EU candidate status for Ukraine and Moldova, while Georgia should meet certain conditions first. Until then, it benefits from a ‘European perspective.’
