President: Georgia's stability, democracy, progress to be EU's goal

Georgian President Salome Zourabicvili has issued a video statement for Europe Day on Sunday.

President claims “Europe has demonstrated that it sees Georgia as an important ally and that Georgia’s stability, democracy, and progress are not just blank words but a real goal and objective.”

“All over Europe, Europe Day is celebrated as the day of unity of European people and European countries. It is based on the values that make up European culture and history.

The history of Europe has shown us that every great challenge, war or calamity is followed by new opportunities, new strength, new energy. We too share the hope of this peaceful future today and on every 9th of May.

Europe has demonstrated that it sees Georgia as an important ally and that Georgia’s stability, democracy, and progress are not just empty words but a real goal and objective. Efforts made by the highest level of European leadership to help Georgia to overcome its political crisis suffice to demonstrate this support. Europe stood next to us.

Our road to Europe is neither easy to walk nor uniform. However, we, in other words, the majority of the Georgian population, have come to understand that this is the real way for the country’s advancement.

I congratulate all our European partners, our European friends, our citizens living in Europe. Today we share this celebration!” President added.

On 9th May the European Union and its member states mark Europe Day,  which celebrates peace and unity in Europe.

The date commemorates the historic 1950 Schuman Declaration, in which Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe’s nations unthinkable.
