President: April 9 highlights need for unity to protect Georgia’s freedom and sovereignty

“April 9, 1989 is one of the most significant dates in Georgia’s modern history — a day marked by both profound tragedy and great victory. It became a turning point in the Georgian nation’s struggle for freedom and left an indelible mark on the country’s centuries-old history,” the Georgian President Mikheil Kavelashvili wrote on social media.

The President said that April 9 serves as a powerful reminder that protecting freedom and state sovereignty requires unity, responsibility, and continuous effort.

“The tragic events on Rustaveli Avenue, and the sacrifice of the Georgian people, showed the world that dignity and freedom stand above all else. Even the violence of that night could not silence the nation’s demand for independence.

The night of April 9 became a symbol of unity and unwavering determination — a path that led, just two years later, to the restoration of Georgia’s state independence on April 9, 1991.

Today, April 9 reminds us that protecting freedom and sovereignty requires unity, responsibility, and a commitment to building a better future. It is an ongoing struggle, and it is the duty of every Georgian to continue this path with dignity,” he wrote.

Kavelashvili concluded his message by expressing gratitude and resolve: “Thank you for freedom! Long live independent Georgia! May God protect us!”

This year marks 37 years since the April 9 tragedy.
