Police complete special raid in Sagarejo, clear shooting site, Interior Minister says
A shooting in Sagarejo killed five people, including a police officer, and heavily injured five others. A special raid in Sagarejo has concluded, de-miners have completed their work, and the area is now safe, Minister of Internal Affairs Vakhtang Gomelauri told the media.
The minister expressed condolences to the relatives of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
“With an automatic rifle, the citizen fired shots from his home. His adult son was at home. The gunfire began on one side of the balcony and then moved to the opposite side. Then his kid left the house. When the police arrived, he opened fire from the opposite side, striking our employee. The detective died on the way to the hospital. So far, this is all we know,” said Vakhtang Gomelauri.
The minister went on to say that the person accused of the attack served in the Georgian Armed Forces until 2021.
“He joined the military in 2006 and left in 2021. He has also been to Afghanistan, on a peacekeeping mission,” Vakhtang Gomelauri explained.
Gomelauri further stated that when the special task force got to the accident site, they discovered the offender was dead on a bed with a fatal shot in his head. The offender’s child could explain nothing about the shooting, just stating he fled after seeing dead bodies.
An assailant opened fire from a private apartment late last night in Sagarejo. Five people were killed, and five more were wounded. The Interior Ministry reported the offender committed suicide.
