Police arrest repeat offender over large-scale fraud

Officers from the Fraud Division and the Main Detective Division of the Tbilisi Police Department, operating under the Ministry of Internal Affairs, have arrested a previously convicted individual on charges of large-scale fraud.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs stated that the investigation revealed the suspect had defrauded an acquaintance by promising to purchase mobile phones below market value in exchange for an upfront payment for resale. The suspect claimed he would split the sales profits equally; however, he failed to deliver on his promise and unlawfully seized 45,360 lari, a large sum belonging to the victim.

“As a result of operational measures and investigative actions conducted by law enforcement officers, the man was arrested as a suspect pursuant to a judge’s warrant.

An investigation is underway under Article 180, Part 3 of the Criminal Code, which carries a sentence of up to nine years’ imprisonment,” the ministry statement read.
