PM: Transparency and freedom of speech are fundamental values that uphold democracy
“There is no alternative to transparency in a democratic society; it’s a cornerstone of our democratic principles,” stated the Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze during a government meeting.
Addressing the re-introduction of the draft law on transparency of foreign influences, Kobakhidze reiterated the significance of transparency in democratic institutions.
“Transparency and freedom of speech are fundamental values that uphold democracy. Transparency is essential, and no one can argue otherwise,” the PM stated.
“The activities of ‘Fact-Check’ and ‘Myth Detector,’ affiliated with our political opponents, demonstrate a concerning trend of censorship on social media platforms,” he explained. “This censorship, prevalent during their tenure in power, undermines the fundamental principles of transparency and freedom of speech. Opacity and censorship have no place in our democracy. We must uphold transparency and freedom of speech at all costs.”
Kobakhidze emphasized the importance of transparency in society, particularly regarding NGO finances.
“False information is circulating, suggesting that information on NGO financing is available to the government and public institutions. This is untrue. Upon examination of seven prominent NGOs, it was revealed that since 2012, they have declared a mere 18% of their total expenditures. Out of over GEL 85 million in total expenditures, only GEL 15 million, or 18%, has been accounted for. The remaining funds, amounting to at least 70 million GEL, have been spent without transparency or specific disclosure of sources,” he stated.
Kobakhidze stressed the importance of adopting new legislation to address these transparency issues.
“This lack of transparency undermines accountability and trust in the NGO sector. The public deserves to be fully informed about NGO finances and activities,” he asserted. “Adopting the newly initiated draft law is crucial in ensuring transparency and accountability within the NGO sector.”
