PM: Tbilisi Dry Port to play pivotal role in strengthening Georgia's transit function
“Tbilisi Dry Port, the first modern railway container and cargo terminal in Tbilisi, commenced operations,” said Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze at the official opening ceremony of the Tbilisi Dry Port.
According to the PM, the strategic facility will play a key role in increasing trade flows in the Caucasus and Central Asia region.
“Tbilisi Dry Port, extending onto 28.5 hectares of land, will be constructed in three phases: The first phase, with USD 21 million invested, will enable the procession of 100.000 containers annually. The capacity will increase up to 200.000 containers after the completion of other phases. This strategic facility, alongside sea ports such as Poti, Batumi and Anaklia, will play a key role in increasing trade flows in the Caucasus and Central Asia region, further strengthening Georgia’s transit function,” he said.
Irakli Kobakhidze remarked that the Tbilisi Dry Port will serve not only Georgian ports but also assume the function of a hub for international sea channels.
“This will significantly improve the operations of container procession and their movement, especially from China and those from the Far East transited through the Middle Corridor. The Dry Port’s strategic location – direct access to international highways, national railway network, proximity to Armenian and Azerbaijani borders and the Tbilisi International Airport, will make it one of the most efficient logistic centres in the region,” he said.
The Prime Minister expressed gratitude to investors AD Ports Group, the Norwegian company Wilhelmsen Port Services, local firm Inveco, and all engineers and constructors who contributed to the successful implementation of the project.
“This project is a big step forward for our country, its economic progress and regional infrastructure development. All this will further strengthen Georgia’s connectivity and transit function to ensure our country’s transformation into a regional hub,” he concluded.
