“The document of the Council of Europe, as well as the Tagliavini Report, confirm the treason committed by the United National Movement (UNM) party. However, other evidence should also be examined for the law to be enforced,” said Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.
The PM was asked to comment on the opponents’ statements that they did not expect to be tried for August war crimes, and this was merely a pre-election message from the ruling party.
“In the coming days, it will become clear what plans we have regarding the issue. These are not only general statements. In fact, trying this political force is vital for this country to rest once and forever and not to be under a constant threat of revolution attempts.
Our principal decision will be enforced following the elections. As for the documents and their role in the investigation process, of course, they represent direct evidence.
In the first case, the UNM signed it and supported the CoE resolution, admitting to starting the war. Therefore, it is documentary evidence of their committed treason.
The Tagliavini Report did not envisage signatures. However, they agreed on the report and evidence presented in the document.
Therefore, both documents, the CoE document and the Tagliavini Report, represent direct evidence which proves the treason committed by the UNM and Saakashvili’s authoritarian regime.
Other evidence should also be examined beyond that for the law to be enforced against those individuals who inflicted tremendous damage to our country in 2008,” the PM said.
On August 14, the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party said that the public trial of the August war was vital for people to know who committed heinous treasonous crimes.
