PM says ex-president to be hospitalized to prison infirmary only if needed
Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said that the only place to hospitalize ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili in case of urgent necessity is the prison infirmary. “Hospitalization to other medical institutions is not considered,” PM claimed.
Referring to security risks, Saakashvili’s lawyer Beka Basilaia said that the decision to hospitalize the ex-president to the infirmary of the N18 prison is a provocation attempt on the part of the government.
According to Basilaia, Saakashvili should be placed at a public medical institution, as similar precedents were set in the case of other prisoners.
“The need for hospitalization may arise very soon. Ex-president has been on a hunger strike for more than 20 days. The health state may aggravate every hour. The Minister of Justice insists on hospitalization at N18 Prison where convicts for criminal cases are serving their prison term,” Basilaia claimed.
Law enforcers arrested Mikheil Saakashvili in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi on October 1 and sent him to N12 Rustavi prison. Ex-president has been on a hunger strike since the very first day of his arrest.
