PM: Next year holds potential for restart in Georgian-US relations; future depends on US actions
“Over the next year, there is potential for a restart in Georgian-American relations. Georgia is a small country compared to the United States, which has considerable global influence, we have limited capacity to effect change on our own. The future of our relations largely depends on the actions of our American partners. We are awaiting their next steps,” said Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze.
Kobakhidze mentioned that detailed and specific messages were conveyed from Georgia during the meeting with Senator Shaheen and Congressman Turner.
“Recently, I had a candid conversation with a senator, a congressman, and representatives from the US embassy. It was an interesting fact that none of them mentioned the law on transparency. I expressed our concerns about the current state of Georgian-American relations and the issues that have arisen over the past four years. I openly discussed past events, including the former ambassador’s involvement in attempting to hold extraordinary elections in Georgia in 2021 and her role in the failed revolutionary attempts of June 2022. We also talked about the unjust decision regarding our candidate status, which was followed by a revolution attempt. Additionally, we discussed the involvement of foreign-funded groups like NGOs seeking to influence our political landscape and demanding government changes.
We outlined our expectations from the United States for the coming year and highlighted that the future of our relationship depends on how these issues are managed. We are hopeful that our American partners will adopt a more just and fair approach, which could lead to a positive shift in relations. Both sides understand that restarting these relations serves the interests of both countries.,” Kobakhidze said.
