PM: Court was in hands of foreign influence agents; since 2012, situation changed radically
Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili on Sunday said after 2012 the judicial system underwent “significant” changes; “when the judicial system was in the hands of foreign influence agents, this institution was used as one of the main tools to oppress people. Today, these people are campaigning against the judiciary, which has been fundamentally transformed after 2012.”
According to the Prime Minister, “Soviet-style propaganda against the judicial system is unacceptable.”
“It is not appropriate when certain types of privileges are used to interfere with the independence of the judiciary. Do you remember the case of judge Chkhikvadze, he was asked to report on a specific case and then his visit to the U.S. was cancelled. This demonstrates that, in the eyes of some, certain privileges and visits are used as a tool to undermine judicial independence, which is a bad practice that should be discontinued.”
