Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili congratulated journalists on World Press Freedom Day, observed on May 3.
“I wish a Happy World Press Freedom Day to all journalists serving their profession honestly and conscientiously. Spreading reliable and balanced information is a journalistic responsibility to their people and country, and fulfilling it steadfastly brings much public appreciation.
And it is work based on these very principles and values that are regarded in the world as highly professional and free journalism because upholding these standards sets the solid stage for democratic development in the country.
The free press is indicative of both the country’s level of democracy and its democratic aspirations. Our country’s media environment has changed over the years, but today we have a free, independent, and pluralistic media domain. Once again, I wish a Happy World Press Freedom Day to all journalists and wish them success in their professional endeavours,” he said.
On World Press Freedom Day 2023, UNESCO will organize a special anniversary event at UN headquarters in New York, marking 30 years since the UN General Assembly’s decision proclaiming an international day for press freedom.
Celebrated every May 3, this year’s theme for the Day will be “Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a Driver for all other human rights,” signifying the enabling element of freedom of expression to enjoy and protect all other human rights.
