PM claims Enguri HPP to be crucial for Georgia's energy independence

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili believes the HPPs in Georgia are crucial for the country’s energy independence. PM said about 40% of electricity generation comes to the Enguri HPP.

Garibashvili observed large-scale works on Enguri HPP on Monday. He noted that no such extensive works were carried out for more than 20 years.

PM stressed that Enguri HPP has always been a major employer in the Samegrelo region. It has 1200 permanent employees and an additional 650 workers.

“The rehabilitation project costs EUR 43 million, including the European Commission’s EUR seven-million grant, and the rest is an EBRD loan. The works kicked off in January and will complete by the end of May,” he stated.

Five units of the Enguri HPP stopped on January 20, 2021, for urgent rehabilitation in the diversion tunnel. The process is ongoing 24 hours a day.
