People’s Power MP defends Georgia’s ‘pragmatic policy’ on Russia, pointing to Ukraine conflict

“Russia did not become our neighbour during the United National Movement’s time in office, nor under Georgian Dream; it is a geographically established fact and reality,” declared MP Guram Macharashvili, Executive Secretary of the People’s Power party.

According to Macharashvili, “were it not for Georgian Dream’s pragmatic policy, Georgia would be facing what Ukraine is experiencing.”

“Following the August War, the United National Movement handed over energy-strategic infrastructure assets to Russia. Saakashvili publicly announced and invited Russian businesspeople to invest in Georgia. They were practically begging Russian businesspeople to come to Georgia, and I emphasise, this happened after the war. Who do these people think they are lecturing today?

Major world powers face challenges regarding Russia, so is it any surprise that Georgia does too? Were it not for our pragmatic policy, Georgia would unfortunately be facing what Ukraine is experiencing today,” Macharashvili said.
