Parliamentary opposition requests Constitutional Court to suspend Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence
The parliamentary opposition has filed an appeal with the Constitutional Court, seeking to suspend the validity of the Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence.
The opposition MP Tamar Kordzaia expressed confidence that the Constitutional Court would take temporary measures to suspend the law.
Kordzaia mentioned that the parliamentary opposition is aligned with civil society, the media, the President, and the citizens.
“We believe the ‘Russian law’ violates the Constitution of Georgia and undermines our democracy. It is our constitutional duty to challenge it in the Constitutional Court. The parliamentary opposition stands united, with 38 MPs signing the lawsuit. Some could not be physically present but have joined this lawsuit,” she stated.
Kordzaia emphasized the urgency of suspending the law before the upcoming elections to prevent irreparable damage to the country.
“The main issue is that we are challenging the entire law concerning Article 78 of the Constitution, but the first step is requesting a suspension. This law must be suspended before the elections to prevent irreparable harm to the country. Sanctions are set to take effect on September 3. So, we believe a meeting must occur before then to discuss the suspension,” said Tamar Kordzaia.
