The Parliamentary Majority will not support the changes prepared by 9 lawmakers and proposed to be made into Law on Courts of General Jurisdiction – Irakli Kobakhidze, Chairman of Parliament and Executive Secretary of Georgian Dream Party said after the sitting of Political Council of Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia Party.

Kobakhidze explained that the ruling team had expressed readiness to hold consultations about the issue of life-term appointment of judges for Supreme Court of Georgia. Nevertheless, one part of the majority MPs prepared the draft-project that contradicts to the Constitution.

Kobakhidze said that if the draft-bill was adopted in its current form, the number of judges would be reduced by half in the court system and the problem of discussions of court cases dragging in time would become more acute.

According to Executive Secretary of Georgian Dream Party, the ruling team applied to Venice Commission, an advisory board of Council of Europe, to become involved in refining of the initiative at the initial stage.

The sitting of Political Council of Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia Party was held at the head office of the ruling party this morning. The meeting was led by party chairman Bidzina Ivanishvii.
