Parliamentary Legal Affairs Committee views possibility of President’s pardon to Saakashvili as anti-state

“Mikheil Saakashvili’s pardoning by President Salome Zourabichvili will mean not only going against state and public interests but disregarding decisions of the high-reputation international court,” said Anri Okhanashvili, Chairman of the parliamentary Legal Affairs Committee.

According to Anri Okhanashvili, the President’s move would follow a serious political reaction.

“Nothing is excluded but we cannot foretell. It seems that a lobbyist group acts, resolutions are adopted by certain members of the European Parliament, and signatures are collected to prompt Salome Zourabichvili to make such a grave decision, and if she takes to excuse herself that it was not her personal decision but prompted by political groups in the European Parliament. If she chooses this way, it would follow serious political assessment,” he said.

The European Parliament on February 28 adopted two resolutions in support of Georgia. MEP Anna Fotyga said that at her request, an amendment had been made to the resolution calling on Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili to pardon Mikheil Saakashvili.
