Parliament votes to reinstate high treason article in Criminal Code

Eighty-six lawmakers unanimously endorsed the initiative to reinstate the High Treason Article in the Criminal Code of Georgia with its third reading.

The following acts committed by a Georgian citizen or a resident without Georgian citizenship will be considered high treason: violation of territorial integrity; entering into an anti-constitutional agreement or engaging in such negotiations; compromising Georgia’s foreign security; enlisting in a foreign intelligence service; undermining defence capabilities; disclosing state secrets; spying; conspiracy; and assisting a foreign organization or an entity under foreign control in hostile activities.

The members of the Georgian Dream (GD) faction and the People’s Power political group initiated and authored proposed amendment.
