Parliament to pass one or another People's Power bill following Venice Commission's opinion, GD Chair says
Irakli Kobakhidze, chair of the ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party, states that the Parliament will pass both People’s Power-tabled drafts in the first reading and then send the documents to the Venice Commission.
According to him, MPs will further work on the version that receives a positive conclusion from the Commission.
“The Commission will give its findings on the details of the proposed legislation. Nobody can deny that transparency is good. There may be separate remarks on one or both laws, which we shall explore. Yet, negative feedback on one or both is unlikely. Some comments or recommendations may refer to the details. As a result, we will adopt one of the drafts in all cases. The Venice Commission is not a political body, it is an institution of legal expertise. As a result, the Commission cannot say that the law should not be passed, especially given that it only concerns transparency,” Irakli Kobakhidze says.
People’s Power movement will initiate the Foreign Agents Registration bill at today’s Bureau sitting. People’s Power also presented the draft on the Transparency of Foreign Influence.
