Parliament Speaker: U.S.’s withdrawal confirms Venice Commission’s transformation into political tool
“The United States’ withdrawal from 66 organisations, citing their lack of utility and wastefulness, once again confirms what we have been saying: that the international order no longer exists,” stated Shalva Papuashvili, Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia.
Regarding the Venice Commission specifically, Shalva Papuashvili, Chair of the Parliament of Georgia, stated that it has transformed into a political weapon against nations.
“The U.S. has pulled out of 66 organisations, which once again affirms our assertion that the international order established after the Second World War, comprising various international bodies, is no longer functioning. The debate within these organisations has been effectively disrupted. America justifies its withdrawal by claiming these organisations are useless and wasteful, which in itself indicates a dilution of their seriousness. It also unequivocally confirms our belief that the international order has disintegrated.
The Venice Commission, in particular, has become a tool for political manipulation rather than a body for impartial legal guidance. Instead of producing professional, legal assessments, it now issues political opinions aligned with certain agendas. This is especially evident in its reports concerning Georgia, where we have seen political conclusions rather than objective legal analyses. We have addressed this point directly with the Venice Commission during our meetings. As a member of the Council of Europe, it is concerning that the Venice Commission has shifted from its original mission – from providing expert legal opinions to serving as a political commentator driven by political motives.
The United States’ decision to withdraw, citing that the Commission is a ‘useless and wasteful organisation,’ further underscores our view that the Venice Commission has strayed from its core purpose,” Papuashvili concluded.
For context, U.S. President Donald Trump signed a presidential memorandum proposing the withdrawal of the United States from 66 international organisations, including the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed on social media: “We will stop subsidising globalist bureaucrats who act against our interests.”
