The Parliament of Georgia has approved, in the first reading, under an expedited procedure, amendments to the law “On the Structure, Powers and Procedures of the Government of Georgia,” with 83 votes in favor and 12 against.

The changes introduce a new position within the Government of Georgia: State Minister for Coordination of Law Enforcement Agencies.

According to Parliamentary Secretary of the Government Vakhtang Bachiashvili, the role is intended to improve coordination among law enforcement bodies and strengthen overall state security management.

“The activities of law enforcement agencies ensure the stable and sustainable development of the country and are important in general for solving the numerous challenges facing the country. As a result of recent personnel changes in the country, the activities of law enforcement agencies have been activated, which are currently carried out both through the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which is part of the government, and through special-purpose state institutions such as the State Security Service and the Special State Protection Service. The introduction of such a coordination mechanism in the executive branch will enhance and make the activities of law enforcement agencies even more effective. At the same time, cooperation in this direction with such constitutional bodies as the State Audit Service, the Prosecutor’s Office system and the Georgian judiciary will be within the scope of the State Minister’s authority,” Vakhtang Bachiashvili noted.
