Parliament approves amendment on first-grade admissions

The Parliament, by 87 votes, approved in the first reading, under an expedited procedure, the Draft Law on General Education, the parliament reported.

According to the amendments, a transitional provision of the law is supplemented with an exceptional regulation, under which, in the 2026–2027 academic year, by the decision of a parent and on a voluntary basis, the opportunity to start studies at the primary level of general education (first grade) will also be granted to a person who turns 6 years old between September 16, 2026, and December 31, 2026.

The draft was introduced by the Deputy Education, Science and Youth Minister, Tamar Makharashvili.

“The first stage of first-grade registration has already begun, and it is important for us that children born between September 16 and December 31 are also given the opportunity to benefit from all stages of registration. Accordingly, we considered it necessary to review this draft law under an expedited procedure”, – stated Tamar Makharashvili.
