Parliament adops amendment to Law on General Education related to commencement of studies at primary level
Based on the draft bill on making amendments to the Georgian Law on General Education, children who will have turned six years old by December 31, 2026, will be eligible for enrollment in the first grade at the request of their parents in the 2026-2027 school year.
The draft bill, approved by the parliament through the third reading with 87 votes for, was presented by Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Youth Affairs Tamar Makharashvili.
According to the amendment, an exceptional regulation is added to the transitional provision, based on which, only in the 2026-2027 school year, by parental decision, voluntarily, children who will have turned six years from September 16 till December 31, 2026, will have the opportunity to commence studies at the primary level of general education.
The parliament reviewed the draft bill in an expedited manner.
