Outgoing Chinese Ambassador says he’s honoured to have advanced bilateral relations; expresses deep gratitude to Georgian government

“Over the past four years, it was a great honour for me to contribute to the rapid development of China-Georgia relations. I have particularly experienced Georgia’s unique charm, its centuries-old history, rich culture, hospitality of its people and their profound respect for traditions,” stated the Chinese Ambassador to Georgia, Zhou Qian, speaking at a reception marking the conclusion of his diplomatic mission.

As the Ambassador noted, the past four years have been a period of swift progress in China–Georgia relations.

“My tenure in Georgia is drawing to a close. Over the past four years, China-Georgia relations have experienced a period of rapid development. Bilateral ties have advanced to a new, higher level on two occasions. In 2023, Georgia became the first country in the South Caucasus to establish a Strategic Partnership with China; and last month, President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping and President of Georgia Mikheil Kavelashvili jointly announced the elevation of China-Georgia relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, marking the beginning of an entirely new stage in bilateral cooperation,” the Ambassador declared.

He added that in 2024, a mutual visa-free agreement entered into force, leading to a substantial surge in passenger travel between the two nations.

“The number of Chinese tourists visiting Georgia reached nearly 130,000 last year, and grew by a further 16.7 per cent in the first half of this year. On July 15, the inaugural direct flight between Shanghai and Tbilisi was launched. These significant achievements in China-Georgia relations have been made possible because both countries are committed to the principles of mutual respect and mutually beneficial cooperation. We firmly support each other’s independence and sovereignty, cooperate for development and remain partners united by shared visions, mutual trust and mutual respect.

It was a great honour for me to contribute to the rapid development of China-Georgia relations. I have particularly experienced Georgia’s unique charm – its centuries-old history, rich culture, hospitality of its people and their profound respect for traditions. Most precious to me is the sincere friendship that I have felt from all of you. These memories will remain in my heart forever!

The success of China-Georgia relations would not have been possible without your support and dedication. Therefore, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Prime Minister Kobakhidze, the Government of Georgia, the Parliament and all relevant institutions.

I will always remain a friend of Georgia and will continue to support the friendship between our two countries,” stated Zhou Qian.
