Orthodox Church celebrates Palm Sunday

The Orthodox Church today celebrates Palm Sunday, one of the Twelve Great Feasts.

The Patriarchal Locum Tenens, Metropolitan of Senaki and Chkhorotsku Shio (Mujiri), will lead the Divine Liturgy at the Sioni Patriarchal Cathedral at 10:00. Following the service, a memorial prayer will be held for the soul of the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II.

Palm Sunday is observed on the Sunday before Easter and commemorates the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.

On this day, believers attend church services carrying boxwood branches — a local tradition — which they then keep in their homes throughout the year.
