Gigi Ugulava, one of the former leaders of the United National Movement (UNM) party, initiated the unification of various competing opposition parties under the UNM umbrella.

Ugulava said in a live interview with TV Pirveli that the UNM was the “hair of national line and fought against the Soviet remnant, Georgian Dream.

According to Gigi Ugulava, this unification would attract more voters and politically active individuals. He said some parties like the Lelo, For Georgia and former politicians, could form a new coalition.

Levan Ioseliani, a member of the Citizens party, remarked on the initiative, saying he is not interested in Gigi Ugulava’s ideas. He further claimed that there is no trust among the opposition parties.

“The opposition is very diverse and, as it showed so far, reaching an agreement within the opposition is often difficult. In my opinion, this complexity lies in the fact that the National Movement finds it difficult to communicate with the opposition of different opinions and political tastes,” Ioseliani said.

Leader of the European Georgia, Giga Bokeria, tagged Gigi Ugulava’s initiative as ‘absurd and unserious to consider.’

“Political union must be based on values and views. Any other type of unification is either doomed to failure or brings failure and disaster to the country. Georgian Dream is a clear example,” Bokeria stated.

Girchi party member Iago Khvichia slammed the idea and said that his party would hardly unite under the UNM umbrella.
