Opposition MP proposes abolishing UNM chair's position to save party from breakup

The United National Movement (UNM) party can only avoid division if ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili abolishes the chairman’s position, stated opposition MP Khatia Dekanoidze.

“It is disheartening to discover that the significance of the Rose Revolution date is tied to the expulsion of several individuals from the party. Opposition parties should set an example of contrast and democracy. If the expelling moment comes, this will be another serious problem in the UNM,” she said.

Khatia Dekanoidze explained she had quit the party due to specific problems.

“I quit the party because of the problems, which contradicted unity,” she said, adding a council should be established in the UNM that would make decisions based on parity principles.
