Ombudsman's Office: Russia responsible for alleged violation of Georgian citizen's right to life

“The Russian Federation is responsible for the alleged violation of a Georgian citizen’s right to life as it exercises control over the occupied territory”, the Office of the Public Defender of Georgia said on Sunday.

The Public Defender remarked after media reports said that Georgian citizen Teymur Karbaia was apprehended in occupied Gali for “unknown reasons”, after which he was physically abused and brutally beaten by local militia, resulting in his death on 9 December.

The Office calls on the Georgian authorities, as well as all international human rights protection and monitoring organizations, to make every effort to guarantee an effective investigation of the aforementioned fact, the punishment of culprits, and Russia’s accountability.

According to the statement, the Public Defender expresses “deep sorrow” and expresses his condolences to the family members of the deceased.
