Oliver Varhelyi to Georgian gov't: You know what is required, so do it
Oliver Varhelyi, European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, on Thursday, recommended to the Georgian government “to speed up the work on all the areas, so that in October we can have a fully filled report on Georgia, on Ukraine, on Moldova. We are ready when the performance is there.”
“My sentiment from the discussion of today, but also from the previous ones, also from December, is that there’s a genuine engagement now on the side of the Council and of the member states,” he stated following the informal meeting of European Affairs Ministers in Stockholm, Sweden.
Varhelyi went n to say that “the European Perspective for Georgia is already a ground-breaking decision of the European Council.”
“And enlargement is not only back on the agenda, but it’s back among the top three issues the leaders are dealing with. If anyone wants to get into the European Union nowadays, this is the moment, so grab it. Use the opportunity.
And I was fortunate enough to see the Prime Minister last week in Brussels, and this was the message – you know what is required, so do it. Do it, because this is a unique opportunity. Everyone should profit from it to the maximum. We are ready to help to get there, but the criteria have to be met by all.
This was not so evident, to say the least. And, I think that this signal is clear and strong and it’s still alive. So use it. Use it. Don’t look at others. Look at what you can do, and what you can deliver, and the country should be able to make the next move if everything is delivered,” he underscored.
Varhelyi also presented a report on Georgia, saying the nation fulfilled 3 of the 12 priorities outlined by the European Commission.
