Non-electronic identity cards issued before July 28, 2011, to be annulled from July 1, 2024

Starting from July 1, 2024, non-electronic identity cards issued to Georgian citizens before July 28, 2011, will be annulled. Today’s parliamentary bureau session will address the initiation of applicable amendments.

According to amendments, the new ID cards will include the same identification data as the old ones.

This draft bill, proposed by the ruling Georgian Dream members, aims to encourage citizens to replace their non-electronic ID cards with electronic ones. The changes were initiated to facilitate proper conduct in future elections, ensuring citizens have the latest identification technology.

The decision follows consultations between the opposition and the majority, addressing concerns raised by MP Fridon Injia regarding the preservation of voting rights with laminated ID cards.
