Nine arrested over Vake Park tragedy

The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs detained nine people in connection with the tragedy at Vake Park that claimed the life of a 13-year-old girl, said Kakha Muradashvili, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ Tbilisi Police Department, at today’s briefing.

The deputy head of Tbilisi City Hall’s environmental protection department, the director and several employees of Greenservice +, a representative of New Metal Design, the director and inspector of Mshenexpert, and two private electric welders are among those arrested.

The official of Tbilisi City Hall is prosecuted under Article 342, Part 2 of the Criminal Code, which implies negligence that resulted in the loss of human life. Greenservice+’s director was detained under Georgian Criminal Code Articles 220 Prima, Part 2 and 362, Part 1, which refer to negligence that resulted in the loss of human life. He is also suspected of forging official documents.

From the beginning of the investigation until now, the Tbilisi Police Department and the Vake-Saburtalo Police Main Division have conducted hundreds of investigative and procedural actions, questioned the people involved in the case, and taken material evidence while inspecting the accident scene and core documents.

Three teenagers were electrocuted while attempting to retrieve a ball that had fallen into the Vake Park fountain on October 13. One died, while two were hospitalized following electrocution.
