New road safety strategy to prepare legal framework for rear seat belt use

Georgia’s new 2026–2030 National Road Safety Strategy highlights the importance of seat belt use by passengers seated in the rear seats of vehicles.

According to the strategy, the government plans to prepare a legislative framework making the use of seat belts in rear seats mandatory.

“Within the context of modern road safety, the use of seat belts is considered one of the key measures for preventing fatalities and serious injuries resulting from road traffic accidents,” the strategy states.

It notes that research shows seat belt use by rear-seat passengers plays an important role in protecting both the passengers themselves and those seated in the front of the vehicle.

“Therefore, establishing a mandatory requirement for the use of seat belts in the rear seats of vehicles and introducing appropriate regulation is of particular importance,” the document says.

The strategy also emphasizes the need for comprehensive government measures to promote a strong culture of seat belt use and maintain high levels of compliance.

According to the document, the government plans to establish an appropriate regulatory framework and effective enforcement mechanisms, alongside targeted social campaigns and educational initiatives aimed at raising public awareness.
