“New Rights” leader says Margvelashvili may become joint presidential candidate of opposition
Manana Nachkebia, one of the leaders of “New Rights” opposition party, confirms that President Giorgi Margvelashvili is being discussed as one of the presidential candidates for presidential elections in October 2018.
Nachkebia said that political consultations are undergoing between main non-parliamentary and parliamentary opposition parties on the issue. She said the candidate, who is not a member of any political party, is much more acceptable for the opposition.
“Margvelashvili was elected as the candidate of the “Georgian Dream”, but afterwards he was able to maintain independence, and in many cases he showed us a serious scrupulousness. Most importantly, this person understands what democracy and balance between the branches of the government are.
So far, I suppose, and according to his interviews, Giorgi Margvelashvili has not yet decided whether he is going to run or not, but if he runs, it will be good for the development of democracy in the country. Another resource for a above-party candidate is probably in the non-governmental sector. The main thing is that a person who may become president should have experience and political knowledge. The main spectrum of opposition parties are involved in the negotiations,” Nachkebia said.
