NATO's door open to Georgia, Ukraine if they meet requirements, Secretary Blinken says
“The Alliance [NATO] reaffirmed in 2008 that its door was open to Ukraine and to Georgia as well and if they continue to seek membership and meet the requirements, that will move forward,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in an interview with NBC.
“But what’s so striking of all about this if you go back to 2014 when Russia went into Ukraine, is that everything President Putin says he wants to prevent, he has actually been provoking by its actions.”
Asked why hasn’t the action of Russia amassing troops and terrorizing Ukraine right now been a trigger for any punishment? Secretary Blinken said: “We are prepared together in a coordinated way to take very strong action if Mr. Putin continues his aggression against Ukraine.”
Secretary Blinken stressed that “if Russia continues to take reckless and aggressive actions, we will respond – and not only us, partners and allies around the world.”
