National Food Agency: Initial tests clear 81 samples in Tbilisi kindergarten norovirus probe

The National Food Agency (NFA) is continuing its investigation into norovirus-induced gastroenteritis cases among children in Tbilisi kindergartens.

According to the NFA official statement, initial food safety laboratory testing of 81 samples has revealed no violations or contamination to date. Testing of remaining food and environmental samples continues, with results to be released in phases as analyses are completed.

The agency’s probe follows reports last week that 55 children and one teacher across 20 Tbilisi kindergartens presented with symptoms of food poisoning, seeking treatment across six medical facilities in the capital.

The Minister of Health later clarified that while over 100 children ultimately required hospitalisation due to severe gastroenteritis symptoms, no critical complications or life-threatening risks were recorded. State investigative authorities formally launched an inquiry into the kindergarten outbreak on 18 September.
