MP Zarkua: Peter Fischer did everything to drive Georgian-German relations into a deadlock

Irakli Zarkua, Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Diaspora and Caucasus Issues Committee, said he expects Germany’s new ambassador to Georgia to respect the country’s history, culture, and traditions and to carry out his diplomatic mission by strengthening bilateral relations.

Commenting on former German Ambassador Peter Fischer, Zarkua accused him of interfering in Georgia’s internal affairs and said Fischer had contributed to the deterioration of Georgian-German relations.

“Peter Fischer did everything to drive Georgian-German relations into a deadlock. He supported radicals, attended protests and court hearings, and interfered in the country’s internal affairs,” Zarkua said.

He added that Georgia’s Ambassador to Germany, Aleksandre Kartozia, is scheduled to present his credentials to the German president, noting that the process became possible after Fischer’s term in Georgia ended.

“We expect one thing from the new ambassador: to respect this country’s history, culture, and traditions, and to fulfill his diplomatic mission by strengthening cultural and economic ties between the Georgian and German peoples,” Zarkua said.

Aleksandre Kartozia is scheduled to present his credentials to the President of Germany on July 23. He was appointed Georgia’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Federal Republic of Germany in September 2025.
