MP Sharashidze: Fact that Ambassador presented credentials after 10 months is result of situation created by GD

Giorgi Sharashidze, a member of the For Georgia party, questioned the Georgian government’s portrayal of the presentation of Georgia’s ambassador’s credentials in Germany as a major achievement, arguing that such procedures should take place without lengthy delays.

“What is Georgian Dream celebrating? While our neighbor Azerbaijan is signing strategic cooperation agreements, including with Germany, why should we be happy that, after ten months of waiting, our ambassador is finally presenting his credentials to the German president? Is this really something to celebrate?” Sharashidze said.

He argued that Georgian ambassadors should present their credentials immediately after appointment, rather than waiting months.

Sharashidze also criticized the government’s rhetoric toward Germany, saying it had damaged bilateral relations.

“We want relations with Germany, the European Union, every EU member state, and the United States not only to normalize, but at least to return to the level they once were. Germany has invested enormous resources in Georgia’s development, yet Georgian Dream used offensive rhetoric toward Germany, prompting the German government to remind the Georgian authorities that an ambassador represents the interests of their state,” he said.

Commenting on reports that Germany’s Foreign Ministry had removed outdated information from its website identifying Salome Zourabichvili as Georgia’s president and Ilia Darchiashvili as foreign minister, Sharashidze said he did not believe the change was connected to the departure of former German Ambassador Peter Fischer.

“Georgian Dream should stop trying to blame everything on the ambassador and instead look at its own actions. I do not believe the removal of that information from the German Foreign Ministry’s website was directly linked to the ambassador’s departure,” he said.

Sharashidze added that any development serving Georgia’s European future should be viewed positively and expressed hope that Georgia would restore close relations with its European partners.
