MP Samkharadze: Luxembourg side told us many details about Georgia-EU relations were unknown to them

Nikoloz Samkharadze, Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s Foreign Relations Committee, said the Georgian delegation discussed a range of issues during meetings with the Speaker, Deputy Speakers and committee chairs of the Luxembourg Parliament, including bilateral economic cooperation, the occupation and relations with the European Union.

According to Samkharadze, the meetings in Luxembourg were productive and informative.

“They asked us to provide them with as much accurate and detailed information as possible about what is happening in the occupied regions. We provided information on Georgia’s economic progress. Of course, we also discussed relations with the European Union. We explained in detail the process that has been developing in Georgia since 2022, after we submitted our application. We also discussed in detail the interference in the 2024 elections. We had ample time to explain our position to the Luxembourg side and express our readiness to engage with EU institutions in the same format,” Samkharadze said.

The meetings in Luxembourg were productive and interesting. At the end of the meeting, the Luxembourg side told us that many details had been unknown to them. They were unaware of the issue concerning the Parliamentary Assembly — specifically, why Georgia does not send a delegation to the Council of Europe. They were also unaware that the European Union continues to demand that Georgia impose sanctions on Russia. They were unaware of the extent of the interference that took place during the elections. They did not know that specific European politicians had come to Georgia and stood at the protests,” Samkharadze said.

“Knowing these details is important for them, because they now see the processes differently,” he added.
