MP Natvlishvili about meeting with Commissioner Varhelyi: Democracy cannot function without opposition
The fact that Olivér Varhelyi met with not just the government but also a broad range of parliamentary groups, including the opposition, conveys a message that democracy cannot function without the opposition. A member of the Lelo for Georgia parliamentary faction, Ana Natvlishvili, said after the meeting.
Natsvlishvili remarked that Olivér Varhelyi’s demand for unity did not come as a surprise to her because the Prime Minister had the opportunity to meet with the Commissioner with consensus-based outcomes on the EC’s 12-point priorities’ implementation.
“The Commissioner’s message is very clear: marginalizing and disregarding the opposition is not democratic,” she stated.
As Natsvlishili stated, the Commissioner’s key message is a request for reforms to be implemented.
“Neither Georgia nor the European Union has the right to quit this endeavour,” she continued.
