MP Makhashvili: Reasons Trump cited for withdrawing from these organisations are relevant to Georgia

“The rules-based international order is being completely dismantled and violated,” the Chair of the European Integration Committee, MP Levan Makhashvili, has stated in connection with the United States’ withdrawal from 66 international organisations.

According to Makhashvili, “these American decisions are precisely one good manifestation and indicator of this.”
He added that there are indeed questions regarding these organisations.

“People may have differing opinions about specific organisations, but the fact remains that the reasons Trump cited for withdrawing from these entities are directly relevant to Georgia as well. We observe that many of those operating in Georgia, including the Venice Commission, are deviating from their original founding mission, the purpose for which these organisations were established. Unfortunately, they have transformed into bodies that, as Trump himself stated, support a radical agenda, promote it in various forms, and, in Georgia’s case, the so-called opinions of the Venice Commission have been used as a kind of lifeline for these radicals. Therefore, these issues are equally pertinent to Georgia.

We have no intention of leaving these organisations, but the reality is that questions remain regarding their purpose. In our own interests, we would prefer these organisations to refocus on their original, core mission: to provide legal opinions and assistance to member countries, helping them improve their legislation, rather than promoting a radical agenda in Georgia or elsewhere,” Levan Makhashvili stated.

For reference, U.S. President Donald Trump has signed a presidential memorandum envisaging the United States’ withdrawal from 66 international organisations. These organisations include the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe.
