MP Makhashvili: EU should adopt fair approach toward Georgia

According to Levan Makhashvili, Chair of the Georgian Parliament’s European Integration Committee, the Georgian delegation is discussing issues of mutual interest during meetings held as part of Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili’s official visit to Luxembourg.

Makhashvili said the EU Foreign Affairs Council provides Georgia with a good opportunity to discuss all problematic issues with EU member states.

“The EU Foreign Affairs Council is scheduled to take place in Luxembourg in a few days. At a time when Brussels has decided to keep the door closed for now, this is a good opportunity for us to discuss with EU member states all the issues that previously led to the decision to close that door. I am confident that we will have a productive discussion.

Our main message is that the EU should treat Georgia fairly. Georgia is not asking for any special or privileged treatment, exceptional requirements, or a shortcut to EU membership. Rather, it is asking for fair treatment, within which there can be constructive dialogue. When there is fair treatment, dialogue is, of course, an integral part of the process — not closing the door, but dialogue,” Makhashvili said.
